Stephanie Murphy, Florida Democratic Representative and Winter Park local, announced that she is launching a statewide listening tour as she considers a run against Republican Senator Marco Rubio for a Senate bid in 2022.
Recently re-elected for a third term to represent Florida’s 7th Congressional District, House Rep. Murphy announced in an interview with CNN that she is ‘seriously considering’ running for a higher office in the next senate election and plans to further her consideration during a statewide listening tour called “Cast Forward.”
Murphy’s campaign announced that the initial phase of the tour will include a series of open discussions with Floridians about topics including social justice, climate change, consequences of the pandemic, and more. With aims to refocus, educate, and prepare voters for the future, Murphy plans to prioritize the issues surrounding the pandemic over her political agenda.
To roll out the details for Cast Forward, Murphy also released a new campaign video last Wednesday in which she revealed that she was only a baby when her family fled Vietnam and was rescued by the United States Navy. Emphasizing her story as a refugee, Murphy said that her parents “sacrificed an awful lot in escaping socialism.”
In her efforts to bring this initiative to the people, Murphy has hired Lauren Calmet, the former political director of the Florida Democratic Party, to run the campaign and has also spoken with Georgia voting rights activist Stacey Abrams.
