Winter Park City Commissioner Todd Weaver apologized on Wednesday for missing a key vote at the latest City Commission meeting regarding a potential switch to single-member districts in Winter Park.
In an open letter posted on Facebook by The Winter Park Voice, Weaver expressed regret that he had missed the meeting, explaining that he had developed “a severe migraine and other symptoms that were similar to COVID.” He stated that he was physically unable to participate in the meeting, even virtually.
An outspoken supporter of the push for single-member districts, Weaver encouraged community members to continue working towards their goal and educating themselves on the issue.
“Since the vote last week, I’ve learned that groups supporting Single Member Districts are launching a petition drive to put this issue on the ballot,” Weaver said in his letter. “I support and applaud that effort. This will give our citizens an opportunity to learn more about the pros and cons of Single Member Districts so they can make an informed decision.”
Weaver’s absence at the November 11 meeting led to a 2-2 tie on the vote to include a single-member district referendum on the March 2021 ballot. The tie ended the process of adding the referendum to the ballot.
Weaver has since tested negative for COVID-19.
