The Winter Park High School boys volleyball team is celebrating an undefeated season that ended with a thrilling victory over defending champs, Miami Southwest, at Saturday’s Florida High School Athletic Association championship at Polk State College.

The victory, reported Saturday on OrlandoSentiel.com, came after the Wildcats took their semifinal match against Lake Howell by scores of 31-29, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-13. They went on to beat Miami Southwest in the first two finals sets, 25-18 and 25-18, before losing the third and fourth sets, 20-25 and 14-25. With Miami one point away from victory in the fifth set, Winter Park scored four in a row to take the game and the match by a score of 16-14.

The Wildcats came into the championship with a No. 1 state ranking by MaxPreps and were No. 2 in the FHSAA power rankings. It was the Wildcats second state championship since 2022, when the team made the No. 18 spot on the USA Today/American Volleyball Coaches Association boys volleyball Super 25.

Next month, local athletes will step back into the spotlight when the Women’s Varsity 8 boat returns the U.K. to represent Winter Park Crew at the 2024 Henley Royal Regatta, July 2-7.
