On June 11, the City of Winter Park announced that Vice Mayor Carolyn Cooper and Commissioner Marty Sullivan were recently appointed to serve on one of the Florida League of Cities’ five Legislative Policy Committees. In its recent press release, the City said that Cooper was appointed to the Finance & Taxation Committee, and Sullivan will work with the Utilities, Natural Resources & Public Works Committee.

In May, Vice Mayor Cooper received the 2021 Home Rule Hero Award from the FLC for her efforts in the Winter Park community with fellow honoree, George Wiggins, the City of Winter Park Building & Permitting Services Director. Casey Cook, the Florida League of Cities director of legislative affairs, said that the two Winter Park recipients went above and beyond in their hard work and advocacy efforts during the 2021 legislative season.

“They made an extraordinary effort, were actively engaged, and highly effective in their advocacy efforts,” Cook said. “Even with all the various challenges present this year due to the pandemic, they engaged with legislators, shared their stories and made their voices heard, and it made a difference. On behalf of the league and its legislative team, it’s my sincere honor to recognize this year’s award recipients and thank them for their service.”

The Florida League of Cities (FLC) is an organization united by Florida’s municipal governments to develop and implement legislative action. Its committee members also serve as advocates for local decision-making during the legislative process. In 1922, the FLC was founded to promote local self-government and serve the needs of Florida’s cities.
