Winter Park has issued a precautionary alert for Lake Killarney due to potentially elevated bacteria levels.

According to a statement from the city, the alert is in response to the failure of a privately-owned lift station on the east side of the lake. Residents and guests are asked to refrain from all recreation, irrigation, and fishing until further notice.

The Winter Park Lakes Division manages and maintains the city’s lakes and waterways, performs canal maintenance and water quality monitoring, and assists with stormwater management. According to a representative, samples are taken from area lakes every two weeks as part of the division’s water quality monitoring.

Samples will be collected from Lake Killarney on Thursday, July 21, and again on Tuesday, July 26. A notification will be posted on the City of Winter Park website as soon as the water samples return to normal levels.
