FDLE Investigating Police-Involved Shooting at Winter Park Events Center

An officer-involved shooting at a wedding reception on Saturday night left one person dead, Winter Park police confirmed.  

According to a news release from the department, officers responded to a call, placed around 9:40 p.m., regarding a disturbance at the new Winter Park Event Center, located at 1050 W. Morse Blvd. One of the responding officers was attacked and knocked unconscious by 39-year-old Daniel Patrick Knight, who then attacked a second officer. 

During the altercation, the second officer shot Knight, who was transported to Advent Health Orlando hospital where he later died from his injuries. Both officers were also transported to the hospital and later released after being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to news reports, Knight was attending the wedding of his niece.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is currently investigating the shooting, and the officer who discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative leave as standard procedure.
