Winter Park commissioners will meet to discuss a one-year program banning a variety of single-use plastic items from city offices and venues. Events like the Winter Park Farmers’ Market and Sidewalk Arts Festival will be prevented from buying, selling, or distributing products such as plastic bags, straws, plates, and Styrofoam containers.
Although the ban is not citywide, the restrictions apply to vendors who have a contract with the City or any entity renting a city-owned building. The City will not renew contracts with vendors who do not comply with the program. According to city staff, however, there are a few exceptions to the ban. Vendors can still sell bottled water and provide plastic utensils. The restrictions also do not apply to people with disabilities.
Commissioners are scheduled to meet in person next week on November 11 at the Community Center to give final approval of the program. Residents who wish to participate in the meeting may do so virtually.
Once the ban takes effect, there will be a six-month grace period to comply.
